Why do marine engines overheat even when the oil level and coolant look fine?
Overheating is often caused by restricted raw water flow, a fouled heat exchanger, or a worn impeller rather than a coolant or oil issue, which is why a full cooling-path inspection is usually needed to find the cause.
How often should impellers be replaced?
Refer to the applicable OEM maintenance schedule for a manufacturer-specific impeller replacement interval. Many operators replace impellers on a set interval regardless of visible wear, since failure can be sudden.
Can a blocked strainer really cause an overheating shutdown?
Yes. Restricted raw water intake reduces cooling capacity throughout the system and is one of the more common and preventable causes of overheating.
