TYPICAL PROBLEMS
Marine fuel systems are exposed to water ingress, tank condensation, and, on vessels with long storage periods between uses, microbial growth commonly referred to as “diesel bug.” These conditions tend to show up as hard starting, power loss under load, abnormal exhaust smoke, or filters that clog faster than expected. Rough weather can also disturb sediment that has settled in fuel tanks, introducing contamination into the fuel supply at a time when reliable engine performance matters most.
DIAGNOSTIC APPROACH
A fuel system evaluation typically starts with a fuel sample check for water and contamination, followed by inspection of filtration and water separators, fuel lines, and tank condition. Depending on findings, this may extend to injector and fuel pump testing to determine whether a performance issue originates in the fuel system or elsewhere in the engine. Where fuel polishing or tank cleaning is required, this is addressed through inspection, contamination diagnostics, filtration assessment, and coordination of the appropriate service.
